Show Notes

Firing a client is never easy, but sometimes it’s necessary in order to protect your business and your core values.

In this episode, I highlight things to consider before cutting ties with a client, and why it’s crucial to salvage as much of your professional relationship as possible when it’s time to say goodbye.

In this episode, you’ll also hear:

Must-listen moments:

[00:01:35] Be very clear and specific about the issues you've identified, try to remain professional and avoid becoming emotional.

[00:02:36] Provide a very clear and specific formal disengagement letter to the client. It should include the reasons for the termination, how information is gonna be passed on, and the date on which the relationship will actually end.

[00:03:34] If possible, try to resolve the issues and maintain a positive relationship. However, if the relationship becomes too difficult or damaging to you or your business, it may be necessary to part ways, but do your best to leave the relationship on good terms.

[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to another episode of Financial sns, your Bite Sized Financial Information. Today we're gonna talk about steps you wanna take before you break up with a client. In our company, we really like our clients, and it might seem strange that it's so important to us. We spend a lot of time with our clients and we become invested in their success. And when we have issues with clients, it really bothers us and we try to do everything we can to solve the problems, but occasionally we come across situations where there's no fixing differences in ideals. Firing a client is never an easy decision, but sometimes it becomes necessary to ma maintain your values that are core beliefs of your business. So here are some ideas. And steps that you should follow before [00:01:00] you fire a client. And I think you'll feel better knowing that you did everything you could and your client will probably too. They'll appreciate that you've taken the time to talk to them and have a conversation and tried to work things out. So first, evaluate the situation. Take the time to assess the situation and determine why you wanna fire this client. It could be because of difficult behavior, late payments, or lack of cooperation. Then you wanna have the conversation because now you've identified what the issues are. Schedule a meeting with the client and discuss your concerns. Be very clear. And specific about the issues you've identified, try to remain professional and avoid becoming emotional. Can it be fixed? Is the client willing to fix the issues? Are you willing to, or is it something that just cannot change? You could also offer alternatives if appropriate. Suggest alternative solutions that could resolve the issues, change the [00:02:00] scope, maybe adjusting the terms of your agreement. Will any of those things solve the issue and could you both agree on that? Finally, document the conversation. Follow up with a summary of the conversation in an email. Include any agreements made during the meeting or call, and this documentation can be important if disputes arise or your client is unclear of what was said and you also have it to refer back to, to be clear on what you said and what was discussed. If you do decide to move forward with ending the business relationship, Provide a formal disengagement letter to the client. This is really important because it's going to be very clear and specific about the reasons for the termination, how information is gonna be passed off, and the date on which the relationship will actually end. Above all, be professional. It is so important as you [00:03:00] move through this ending of the relationship to be professional and courteous throughout the whole process. You will not benefit by burning any bridges as the client could always be a potential referral source. Even if your relationship didn't work out, they could tell other people, Hey, they weren't a great fit for us. But man, we love them and we ended a relationship on good terms, or you never know. They may come back as a good client in the future. But remember, firing a client should always be the last resort. If possible, try to resolve the issues and maintain a positive relationship. However, if the relationship becomes too difficult or damaging to you or your business, it may be necessary to part ways, but make sure you leave the relationship on good terms. It'll definitely benefit you and the client. If you wanna talk about anything more, head over to our website, first steps financial.com, and [00:04:00] check out some of the information we have over there and we can continue this conversation.
